Kifach in Darija (Moroccan Arabic) means “How?”

It is a dance/circus/theatre trio about shaping your own identity amidst pulling forces from different directions. It is aimed specifically at a teenage/adolescent audience in modern Morocco; especially those who find themselves at a crossroads between national and foreign cultural influences. This involves for example young learners of foreign languages, teenagers active on (international) social media, and those growing up with Spain literally on the horizon in Tangier, where the show was born. The performance addresses the question: How do I create my own identity in the midst of contrasting forces? The answer, according to its creators, is not a one-size-fits all, but lies in a life-long learning, critical thinking approach to life. The show thus aims to stimulate self-reflexivity, creativity and courage to break with rigid systems… But also sensitivity to nuance and middle ways instead of radical, impulsive and half-informed choices.

It is exactly in this middle way, or balance, that the performers and creators of the show find each other. The cast consists of two circus artists from different specialties, and one contemporary dancer. Physically speaking, balance forms the main overlap in their artistic disciplines. Psychologically speaking, the performers find connection in their relatively new relation to the city of Tangier. Their lives have been radically different: one of them is a woman from a city in the Netherlands, whereas the others are men who grew up in the Rif mountains. Yet, all three migrated to Tangier as young adults, and have been constructing their own paths between their old and new cultural environment
